It has been Confirmed that a new melee system will be used in Battlefield 3 and it sounds a hell lot awesome,

"The hand to hand fighting game play seemed more robust, the screen will populate options for the mouse, you can punch with either hand, counter punch, throw the enemy. It all happened very quickly, but it seemed like you had much more control than ever before in an FPS in respect to hand to hand combat. It’s almost as if they created a fighting system within the game, and it became evident that this was a real focus for Battlefield 3"

is this just campaign, or multiplayer too? I would hate to see the knife go replaced with Hand2Hand combat...I am a dog tag collector.

Well, they haven't really said where the melee combat has changed though I'm expecting it to be in only single player.

Multiplayer I reckon may just be swishing a knife but animations vary sometimes according to what position your in.

I wish they had this on MP. I can just see it now... "Fist and Kick sever only"... you logon to see a bunch of faggots in a circle having a brawl. I used to LOVE knife only servers on BF2... And especially when the admin left. LOL

Yes,

They will be keeping the knife in Multiplayer though they will be tweaking the animation and updating the visuals for the knifing move (animation and visuals are going to be upgraded for everything).

I hope the knife animations look better then CoD.  In those games you just slash around a knife like a mad man.  Not the precise techniques you would expect from a trained solider.  Also I hope there is some cool stealth kills if you sneak up on someone.

The animations will be "unique" in Battlefield 3 Cliffy T.

We did get a glimpse of the knife gameplay in the "12 minute gameplay for Battlefield 3" and man was the dude with the knife spinning it like a Yo-yo  before stabbing the opposing guy.

DICE confirmed that there will be several animations for the knife.
