EA Defends Cop Killing in Battlefield 3

EA has issued a statement in regards to an objective in Battlefield 3 that requires players to shoot police.

Last week the ESRB rated EA’s upcoming shooter Battlefield 3 with an unsurprising “Mature” rating. The board noted realistic gunfire, splashes of blood, stabbing soldiers to death with knives, and even a sequence where a restrained character’s throat is slit off-screen as a cause for the rating. No real big surprise, honestly.

But then the ESRB also revealed a mission objective to be completed that now has EA explaining itself: shooting police officers. This revelation actually conflicts with comments made by the game’s producer Patrick Back earlier this year who said the experience needed to be built so that players are not put in a position to do bad things.

“If you put the player in front of a choice where they can do good things or bad things, they will do bad things, go dark side – because people think it’s cool to be naughty, they won’t be caught,” he explained.

Of course, there’s now speculation that the game’s cop-killing feature will likely spark an outrage from the press and government officials. Similar game features like the “No Russian” level in 2009′s Modern Warfare 2, the chase scene on the London Underground in the upcoming game Modern Warfare 3, and the Taliban multiplayer option in last year’s Medal of Honor have caused enough controversy to force Activision and EA to alter the games and/or issue defending statements. Controversial situations are seemingly great for advertisement.

However on Monday EA issued a response to the police shooting objective, although it’s not one you’d expect. “I don’t think you understand the gravity of the situation. For God’s sake, there is a nuke in Paris! Millions of lives are at stake!!”

Thanks to the folks of at BF-Games.net, we have some Battlefield 3 details and scans of the German GameStar magazine. This news also comes after multiple DICE/EA employees have been tweeting about how tomorrow (the 23rd) will be a big day for Battlefield 3. These were supposed to be released tomorrow, but we’re not complaining. Here’s a few details from the article:?

PC Gamers rant by BF3N

It’s about time that developers such as DICE shined a light on the PC. After all this is where all the FPS games started. It’s a well known fact that PC games are far superior to the mostly outdated consoles, as they get the added benefit of being constantly upgraded when the technology changes. Consoles on the other hand are stuck with whatever hardware they have for 5-7 years. As time progresses we will notice a shift of game quality coming over the PC (as with Battlefield 3) until the next generation of consoles come out. But even then, their superiority will only last a short while, as it’s all the part of the same cycle. While looking at the console industry you can see a pattern of the units becoming PC’s them self. PlayStation keyboard? Xbox Hard drive? Mouse support? Browsers? File managers? Running chopped down versions of Linux and WinXP? Looking from a side line the consoles are sure starting to look like PC’s.

I am expecting the following troll comments:

“Oh but I don’t have 1000′s of dollars to upgrade my PC every month mister BF3Nation editor, so go jump off a bridge, fag”

Really? Let’s do a little comparison…

xBox 360 – 399.99

Extra controller – 59.99 (you always get the extra one, don’t lie)

xBox Live? – If you play a lot it can cost you quite a bit.

How about that HDMI cable? Got to get that Monster Cable – 50 additional dollars.

Uh oh, how about those head phones? So you can talk to your buddies.

With a couple of games to start with you are getting close to the 1000 dollar mark.

Now lets talk PC.

You can take many routes. Yes, there are 3-5 hell even 10k rigs out there. However, as with anything there will be a variety of choices. In all honesty, you can have a respectable gaming rig for less than 800 dollars. TigerDirect.com brand name “Symantex” offers great quality PC’s for less. You can have a powerful CPU with 8 gigs of ram for 399.99 if you shop around and wait for a deal. Now the only thing needed is that dreaded GFX card. Top of the line cards will cost you 300-500 dollars, which will still put you under the 1000 dollar mark. So tell me gamers, where is the comparison that console gaming is cheaper? And don’t listen to the hype. You DO NOT have to upgrade your PC every 6 months. A good gaming rig can lest 2-3 years and run games on high setting without any problems.

There are two ways to build a gaming rig. You can build a lesser quality PC that STILL can preform for a budget, or you can go for the latest CPU’s and GFX cards that can cost thousands. This is why the PC platform developed a bad rep, as people see prices of the latest accessories and they believe you have to be rich to play PC. Nevertheless, it’s far from the truth. Smart shoppers can play the same way, for way less.

So how is the Battlefield 3 superior to consoles?

Graphics, graphics, graphics…

All the major consoles have out-dated hardware, and this is where the PC will shine. The superiority and crispness of the screen shots will make any console boy drool.

64 players for PC.

Some might argue that is too much but in reality it’s just the “haters gun hate” talk. First person shooters are all about the battle. You cannot convince me that its more fun to play with less players. That is just a ridiculous claim. Nothing beats a full blown battle where there is a shit storm behind every corner.

Modding

The modding community has done wonders for Battlefield 2. It extended the life the game by years and even improved it to the point where the MOD became better than the original. While no modding tools are confirmed for Battlefield 3 (yet), that little detail does not matter. Why? Because in the world of PC’s is US gamers who make the rules. We can chop that game up any way we want while console boys will be dependent on DLC. (uh oh, more money to spend console boys)

The superiority of PC gamers.

I believe it’s a well known fact that:

PC gamers > Console gamers.

The skills of PC gamers are unparalleled and do not even compare. Don’t believe me? Even giants like Microsoft think so. Do you know why companies never attempt to combine gaming platforms in online matches? (Such as PC vs PS3 vs XBOX) That is because the PC gamers destroyed the console boys every time they matched up (yes, this already happened). A year ago, Microsoft preformed a study and determined that even that the technology is there, they can’t allow cross platform multiplayer games as the console players do not stand a chance.

This rant is for all you console fanboys constantly attacking the PC. While we are all gamers, and I am happy that you will get to enjoy this title, I strongly recommend for you to try the PC version. Step up to the big leagues. If you enjoy using your Prius version of a gaming rig then it’s fine, but if you ever wondered what’s it like to drive a Ferrari then buy a PC.

No hard feelings, I am just busting some balls here and it’s what gamers do, right?

If you’ve been paying attention lately, you’ll have heard about this feature coming within BF3. The ability to drag your team mates out of the hot zone. While that sounds nifty, just how does it work? Does the rescuer just swoop in, tap a button, and drag your sorry ass to the side line to resuscitate you? Or will players have to wait painfully as their
character hefts you over their shoulders and wobbles slowly to a secure area?

Another question that rises from this is, what about resuscitation? BC2 came in with the ability to revive your team mates. Will BF3 follow suit? Is that the entire reason BF3 even came up with the ability to drag your team mates? If not, then where could a function like this be applied?

Rumor suggests that if you are badly wounded, you will become “unstable”, meaning you will walk slower, and wobble a bit. A team mate can then come up and do the ol’ arm over your shoulder and give you a boost to safety. There you can be given health from a medic. Equally, if you are wounded to the point that you can’t stand, a team mate cancome and ‘drag’ you out of their. It is still uncertain if it’s a quick process or if it’s time consuming. My hopes are that it’s
a quick and simple process, otherwise very few people are going to be saving their team mates for fear that they too will become wounded or dead in the process. But this leaves the door open for certain problems, too. If you have the capability of becoming wounded and otherwise useless due to slow movement speeds… what if no one saves you? What if there isn’t a medic around? Will the game be TOO realistic?

Only time will tell.

Battlefield 3 GameInformer Teaser Leaked by EA Russia

Hot news !! EA Russia leaked the Gameinformer Battlefield 3 teaser video. We do not know yet if there is more footage to come, but the rumor mill speculates that we have a full trailer in store.

So what can we tell from this video? Not much. It seems to only be a cgi / demo preview type footage. The only thing our editors noticed that it is lacking that original Battlefield theme music that we all are very fond of.

Things that we have noticed:
Tanks – Looks like land vehicles will be featured in Battlefield 3 (no surprise there)
Choppers – Since every Bad Company edition had them, this does not shock as at all.
Jets – In the last seconds of the video you can see a Jet destroying a chopper which would confirm and put to rest any doubts that Jets will be included in the final version of Battlefield 3 (whew !!)

Also spotted is a large urban map !! This is getting better & better.

Battlefield 3 Video is due out tomorrow !!

It’s been a long time coming, but the official unveiling of Battlefield 3 is just a day away. Game Informer’s announced that it’s their March cover story, which will give us our first look at the game’s single-player and multiplayer components. Tomorrow, however, EA will release the debut teaser trailer on the official Battlefield 3 website for all the world to see.

Game Informer’s teaser for the cover story boasts “deferred rendering, real-time radiosity, a new animation system borrowed from the EA Sports label, and an exponential leap in destructibility,” for the game’s Frostbite 2 engine. Battlefield 3 executive producer Patrick Bach calls it “the best piece of technology on the market when it comes to building games.”

As with every Game Informer cover story, expect special features and other pieces regarding the game to appear on their website shortly after the magazine is released.

Battlefield 3 to be revealed at GDC ’11

Battlefield 3 tech talks will be held at the Game Developers Conference in 2011. The GDC organizers have recently detailed a list of sessions for the conference and Battlefield 3 makes the list in multiple locations. Making GDC ’11 Battlefield 3′s coming out party. The “SPU-based Deferred Shading in Battlefield 3 for PlayStation 3″, “Lighting You Up in Battlefield 3″ and “The Failure Workshop” are among the listed discussions that will take place at the conference. Hopefully we get some information for the fans before the conference but GDC is not that far into the horizon.

The 2011 Game Developers Conference will be held at the Moscone Center in San Francisco from February 28th to March 4th. In the meantime we’ll just keep using this picture that may or may not be the first glimpse of Battlefield 3 to mark our Battlefield 3 posts.

UPDATE:

Multiple talks on the innovative tech around DICE’s Battlefield 3 are also planned, including Christina Coffin talking on ‘SPU-based Deferred Shading in Battlefield 3 for Playstation 3′. The talk “presents a detailed programmer oriented overview of our SPU based shading system implemented in DICE’s Frostbite 2 engine and how it enables more visually rich environments in Battlefield 3 and better performance over traditional GPU-only based renderers.”

In addition, Kenny Magnusson presents ‘Lighting You Up in Battlefield 3′, with the visual arts talk showcasing ” a detailed overview of the new lighting system implemented in DICE’s Frostbite 2 engine and how it enables us to stretch the boundaries of lighting in Battlefield 3… avoiding costly and static prebaked lighting without compromising quality.”

There are also rumors that a gameplay video will be included.

The 2010 VGA’s (Video Game Awards) is set to air on December 11^th. Spike TV is running ads for it, one of them shows short 10 second teaser clip of a new game that will be revealed during the awards. There is no word yet as what game is, that’s the whole point… It’s a world wide premiere. But from watching the clip we can find many similarities to previous installments of Battlefield.

Judge for yourself:

Don’t get all hyped now. The Battlefield music was edited in by Planet Battlefield (@ gamespy). Is this just a cruel joke or did they stumble on to something? The music fits perfectly into the intro.

Keep in mind this is speculation and by no means any confirmation, so don’t get your hopes up yet. Some people have argued this might be Mass Effect 3 as well.
