Publisher EA has revealed that “hundreds” of players have been banned from playing Battlefield 3 due to cheating.“This week we’ve banned hundreds of offending accounts and have stats-wiped accounts for exploiting (such as boosting)…” a tweet from DICE. EA says it has a “zero tolerance policy” on the issue. The publisher is also planning a patch to remove a number of exploits that gamers have discovered. Another tweet: “To report players cheating or boosting send us a direct message to this Twitter with a screen shot of the Battle Log Report.” So if you think there is a particular issue with the game, some imbalance with a particular item or weapon, let DICE know, they are listening—and watching. Beware cheaters, EA and DICE are looking for you.

Battlefield 3 Limited Edition details were leaked before any gameplay details were announced. Thanks to Game Informer (once again), we can give you a better idea of things to expect from Battlefield 3.

The single player storyline will take place in the year 2014. Game Informer leak demonstrated an 1st Recon Marine Team traveling through Sulaymaniyah, part of Iraqui Kurdistan. This does not mean there will be only one setting of game play as the entire story will not be entirely based in the Middle East. Multiple fan sites are reporting North American and European locations, also. Certainly the Sulaymaniyah storylines are affected by natural phenomenon – earthquakes play a big part in this area of the world as it is near a major fault line. This will lead to some impressive destruction sequences (more on this later). Co-op mode will be included, however details on this are still lacking.

Even though the game offers similarity to Battlefield Bad Company 2, DICE assures us that is not the case. One of the features of Battlefield 2 (such as the commander) will not be returning in the 3rd installment. DICE claims that the feature was not used that much so they have decided to remove it. This could not be further from the truth. Seasoned veteran BF2 players will tell you that having a good commander on your side decided on who would win the matches. Enemy spotting, canon firing, crate dropping commanders made the game unique and special. Just because the majority of gamers did not use it that does not suggest grounds for removal. This has our staff worried. What about chopper controls? It took skill to fly those things in Battlefield 2… But since LOT’S of players don’t have skill will DICE nerf the controls for the “common good” of the game? This is why porting games is nothing but problems. Battlefield 2 Bad Company choppers take absolutely NO skill to fly. If DICE decides to NERF that again you can bet your @$$ major fan base loss.

The multiplayer maps will be able to support 24 players (64 for the PC), and the maps will be bigger to compensate for this. Patrick Bach (the executive producer) stated that four multiplayer classes is the “sweet spot”, so it is more than likely that there will be four classes in Battlefield 3. Jets will be returning (yeeeehaaaw), although these will have their speed balanced to suit the size of the maps. The ability to go prone, one of the notable absences from Bad Company 2, is also returning. Other players will be able to use visual cues such as muzzle flash and vapor traces to locate their prone enemies. The most exciting addition, or certainly in my mind, is that DICE are planning to implement some sort of theater function, like that found in Call of Duty: Black Ops or Halo: Reach. Bach was very cagy about revealing details on this, but promised that more information will be coming soon.

Battlefield 3 statistics are to mimic the Battlefield 2 era. DICE severely underestimated the number of players that would rank up to level 25 or above in Bad Company 2, and have listened to the complaints about the lack of incentives to progress any further. Bach states that they’re “looking into the numbers of how we scale up, what we give away, how we give it away, with the understanding that some people put a lot of time into the game”.

New game engine. Frostbite 2.0 !!

The Frostbite 2.0 engine has introduced streaming technology, deferred rendering, real-time lighting, high dynamic range audio, large-scale destructibility and rapid-prototype animation system. This can be done in a way that has actually reduced the workload for the developer. Here’s a summary of some of the improvements in these areas:

Lighting

The pre-calculations of this engine mean that the correct lighting can be done in a fraction of time it used to need. DICE have integrated a “probe system”, where probes are placed in each level with important information of the level of light needed in that particular area. Each probe contains more information than that present on an entire level of Bad Company 2.

Audio

The sounds of war were recorded during a Swedish military exercise that featured infantry combat, tanks and helicopters. Samples were collected from various distances; this will make it easier for players to use audio cues during the game. For example, the footsteps of a nearby soldier in the same house will be more audible than the shots that are being fired between two soldiers in a confrontation outside of the building. Players will be able to hear the difference between when a vehicle is facing you, and when it is moving in another direction. Sound effects will also be the key cue to inform you when a gun is about to overheat, rather than the previous visual cues.

Destructibility

Nothing on the battlefield will be safe from destruction, not even a seven-story building, but large-scale destruction will not play out like that in Split/Second. Bach said:
It needs to be believable. You can’t have earthquakes all over the place while you’re running and gunning. We want to have set pieces that fit the map. Set pieces can be more than big explosions and big animations. We have some cool things up our sleeves.

Animations

When looking to improve the animations of the soldiers, DICE actually thought about using other engines, such as Havoc, to do this. Then they saw the ANT system, used in EA sports games like FIFA, which operates a series of plug-ins that anyone at EA could use. DICE has integrated this into Frostbite 2.0, but they’ve added their own variances. Now, there are two separate sets of animations for AI characters and multiplayer characters, and the AI moves with more sense of purpose. Their behavior is conditioned by way point technology that issues directives depending on the character’s location and other actions in the vicinity. The characters that you play have also altered. Soldiers now move their heads and guns before they move their bodies, and they transition aggressively into and out of cover. The animations are seamless between running and dropping to the floor.

Battlefield 3 release date: Autumn 2011 (with beta in October?)

With Modern Warfare 3 around the corner we can only wait to see how these 2 giants will compare. Battlefield 3 is 3 years in the making and lots of effort is being put behind this title. Let’s hope it gives MW3 a run for their money

Remember 64 player multiplayer matches, or when the Battlefield series wasn’t compromised in graphics or gameplay due to the Frostbite engine being built primarily for multi-platform play. I do, and for those like me it’s a happy day as there have been a few updates on the Battlefield 3 front.

Dice Ditching DX9 For DX11 And FrostBite 2 For Battlefield 3

First and foremost, Dice has completely built their new Frostbite 2 engine from the ground up. While I was impressed by what Dice accomplished with the original Frostbite, it did have it’s limitations. Frostbite 2 has been built to take full advantage of the extra muscle you can only find on a gaming PC. DX9 will not be supported by the new Frostbite Engine as it has been built primarily around DX11?s architecture, sorry XP users but it’s way past time you upgraded to 7 anyway. Frostbite 2 is also optimized to take full advantage of a 64bit OS and sports features such as multi-core optimization, multi-threading support, compute shader support, and tesselation.

While Dice seems to have taken great care in building Frostbite 2 with a PC platform in mind, the engine is still multi-platform. FB2 for the consoles will be tailored to each consoles specific strengths according to DICE rendering architect Johann Andersson…

“Frostbite 2 is developed simultaneously for the strengths of each platform”

That’s good news for PC gamers that were worried about their experience being somewhat lessened by a multi-platform engine for BF3! Instead of building a single engine that can run on all platforms, Dice has pretty much created multiple versions of FB2, with the console versions of FB2 obviously being scaled back to accommodate the limits of what said console can do.

I leave you with a quote from former DICE CEO Fredrik Lilegren…

“What the PC version is going to be, Battlefield 3, I think it’s going to absolutely blow everyone away, but I can’t tell you what it is, but it will blow people away.”

Lock & load gentleman!

(Source: Kotaku)

Editorial Note: So what does this mean? In all honesty, nothing. DICE will say whatever they need to say to calm the storm that has developed over the PC community. I would not put much trust into this recent statement till we some game specifications on all systems. Until then, all we can do is wait.

Battlefield fans rejoice !! We can all rest happily knowing that Battlefield 3 is confirmed and being worked on as we speak. One of DICE employees who goes by the name Oscar Carlen posted his resume on the web that included some interesting information. To our happy surprise it states that he has been working on the much anticipated game Battlefield 3. The leaked story must of truly been accidental as after the press got a hold of the news Oscar Carlen quickly removed the Battlefield 3 information from his resume. Could this be a mistake? We don’t think so. Why in the world would a game developer put a non existing game on his resume? And the fact that the information was quickly removed only thickens the plot.

IWNet might be great on paper but it lacks the features and inherit capabilities that only a dedicated server can provide. Browsing through the EA studios official blog I have found a touching story of a dedicated FPS gamer who loved the MW series, but got his heart crushed with the recent IWNet news. The dedicated gamer who calls him self “Eddie J.” decided to use the money he was going to purchase MW2 with in a different way. He sent the money to DICE studios to “help them develop” an even better game.

The image of the touching letter with a scan of a check he sent in:
