Dice Ditching DX9 For DX11 And FrostBite 2 For Battlefield 3

First and foremost, Dice has completely built their new Frostbite 2 engine from the ground up. While I was impressed by what Dice accomplished with the original Frostbite, it did have it’s limitations. Frostbite 2 has been built to take full advantage of the extra muscle you can only find on a gaming PC. DX9 will not be supported by the new Frostbite Engine as it has been built primarily around DX11?s architecture, sorry XP users but it’s way past time you upgraded to 7 anyway. Frostbite 2 is also optimized to take full advantage of a 64bit OS and sports features such as multi-core optimization, multi-threading support, compute shader support, and tesselation.

While Dice seems to have taken great care in building Frostbite 2 with a PC platform in mind, the engine is still multi-platform. FB2 for the consoles will be tailored to each consoles specific strengths according to DICE rendering architect Johann Andersson…

“Frostbite 2 is developed simultaneously for the strengths of each platform”

That’s good news for PC gamers that were worried about their experience being somewhat lessened by a multi-platform engine for BF3! Instead of building a single engine that can run on all platforms, Dice has pretty much created multiple versions of FB2, with the console versions of FB2 obviously being scaled back to accommodate the limits of what said console can do.

“What the PC version is going to be, Battlefield 3, I think it’s going to absolutely blow everyone away, but I can’t tell you what it is, but it will blow people away.”

Editorial Note: So what does this mean? In all honesty, nothing. DICE will say whatever they need to say to calm the storm that has developed over the PC community. I would not put much trust into this recent statement till we some game specifications on all systems. Until then, all we can do is wait.

Battlefield Bad Company 2 Beta – PS3 Exclusive. Sorry xBox owners.

Recent news announced by EA brings joy to Playstation 3 owners.  Battlefield Bad Company 2 will have an exclusive beta open only to PS3 gamers. Looks like xBox 360 fans will have to wait for the game to come out and trust dedicated PS3 players to find all mistakes made in the game. I have my faith in the PS3 community.

Battlefield 1943 PC Information

By now, people who have been following the game should know the basics–there are 24 players, two teams in the form of US and Japan, and three classic Battlefield maps called Wake Island, Guadalcanal, and Iwo Jima. Shaun McInnis covered off plenty of details about the game in his preview this week, so be sure to check it out if you’re new to the series. Our preview, however, throws more light on some of the game’s subtleties, such as joining squads, issuing orders, and choosing the right class.

If you want to win in Battlefield 1943, it’s pretty clear that you need to join a squad. You can create a squad and invite up to three other friends into the fray. The main benefit of this is that you can communicate with them directly via voice, which allows you to come up with your own tactics–essential to playing at the highest level. Joining squads also allows you to set waypoints on any of the flags, allowing other squadmates to see at a glance where you want to focus your efforts. You set waypoints by highlighting any of the flags with your aiming reticle and then pressing the back button to select. If it’s a flag that you already control, then a defend icon will appear to your squadmates once it’s selected, and if it’s one that you don’t control, then your squad will know to attack.

While we’re sure the guys at DICE were probably handicapped by having us in their squad, we were able to see some glorious moments thanks to their leadership. For example, when our squad leader indicated a flag to head toward, he flew over in a jet performing a bombing run, clearing the way for us to capture the flag. Once you’ve created a squad, it’s important that the players in the team each fill different roles using the class system. There are three classes to choose from–infantry, rifleman and scout–and while their primary weapons all cater to different needs, so too do their secondary weapons and skills. The infantryman carries a wrench that he can use to repair vehicles, while the scout’s remote detonation explosives are the best way to take out enemy tanks. Playing regularly with the same class will also earn you in-game medals, which will show up in your profile.

Battlefield 1943 is now technically finished and is being approved by Sony and Microsoft for release on their respective consoles. It will also be released on the PC later in the year.
